Murder, kidnapping, espionage and terrorism swirl around beloved spiritual teacher Bhagwan Bhattacharya, known worldwide as “the Guru.” His life has suddenly changed after a woman from the White House staff interviewed him at his rural Tennessee “new age” teaching academy.
Then, in one mysterious night, the woman has been murdered, and Bhagwan has disappeared. Is he alive or dead? Is he a murderer or a victim? The FBI considers him to be a “person of interest,” or possibly a dead man. Is the Guru a terrorist? And how much does he know about the murder?
Political writer Scott Benison, a colleague of the murdered woman and a friend of the Guru, assists the FBI in searching for Bhagwan and solving the murder. The investigative team confronts surprising twists and turns. The case becomes more much more intense when it leads them to a massive terrorist group spanning four states.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, a foolish mistake by a group of kidnappers changes the outcome of two key Presidential elections. The result—an alternate history of the 1990s—positions a new kind of leadership to drive America’s counter-terrorism strategy.
At the new President’s orders, the FBI and the NYPD form a new agency in New York, where Scott Benison and his FBI colleagues continue their murder investigation, and simultaneously pursue the related terrorist cells.
When Scott receives secret communications supposedly from the Guru, the team wonders if
the information is real or a deliberate hoax. Nevertheless, Scott and his associates now know that the terrorists are planning an attack that will kill thousands of Americans. They race against time to identify, locate and stop the deadly operation. As the team works to connect scraps of vital information, a dangerous Pakistani jihadist protects the clandestine terrorist groups by murdering potential informants and creating chaos to confuse investigators.

The Terrorist Who Wasn't An Alternate HistoryMystery edition by Steve Vachss Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed Steve's book. It was well written and an excellent alternate History book. He brought back some of his character's from his first book that made it fun to read. It was like bringing back old friends with Scott Benison and Katy Northrup Benison. The book is relevant in terms of what is going on today. The interesting twists were in his use of historical political figures to craft the background for his story. I enjoyed how the book not only covered a murder investigation but foiled a major terrorist attack. I recommend it highly and hope that Steve continues his great story telling in a follow up novel.
This book is a great read. The author has cleverly written a murder mystery as part of an alternate history terrorism chase, all triggered by mistakes of two small-time criminals. Well-written and fast-moving, it deserves five stars.
I enjoyed this book. It's well written and researched. It's an alternate history set in the 1990s. I highly recommend for fiction lovers.
